SDN and partner organisations observed the 2007 elections in Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Akwa Ibom, States in conjunction with IDASA1. Observers reported systematic electoral abuses that were similar to the worst reports nationally by major observer groups such as the Transition Monitoring Group (Nigeria), European Union and National Democratic Institute.
In key Niger Delta States the elections compounded a dangerous alienation of communities and opposition groups from the electoral system. Only one constituency from over 120 positions being contested has gone to an opposition party and even that result appears to be questionable.
The international community, independent Nigerian observers and both domestic and foreign media have already labelled the elections as ‘not credible’ (U.K High Commissioner) and ‘seriously flawed’ (United States State Department).
